Animal of the Week – Fossa
The Fossa is the largest mammal in Madagascar. It is a carnivore that slightly resembles the cougar. It is usually found in forested habitats and continuously hunts day and night. Its diet consists of lemurs, tenrics, rodents, lizards and birds. How it got its name is very interesting. Its generic name was Cryptoprocta which in Ancient Greek means “hidden anus”. Its butthole (yes the correct name) is hidden by a butt pouch. Since this name was demining the animal, it’s been changed to Fossa which was similar to cat in the Iban language. The fossa can release a stinky smell from their scent glands when they are frightened. Not only does this animal have a funky name it also has a funky smell. Not to mention that this downgraded cougar has round ears like a weasel, a long tail like a monkey and has paws with claws like a cat. It definitely is an interesting creature, not heard of by many.
The slander is immense on this creature but it stands on top of the food chain in Madagascar. What do you think of the Fossa?
