Student discharges fire extinguisher; forces evacuation
A student discharged a fire extinguisher in the boys gym bathroom was the cause of Wednesday’s third period fire alarm. Initially it was assumed it was either a drill or a student pulled it as it has been an issue in the past. The fire detection system picked up the powder from the extinguisher setting off the alarm.
Renton Regional Fire Authority Engine 317 Arrived a short time later and investigated the alarm along with Building Safety Officers and Renton Police. Principal Caudle says that the cost to clean, replace the extinguisher and have the air duct system check will have to come out of the building budget. The same budget that is paying the damage done to the bathrooms.
In the state of Washington it is illegal to tamper with a fire alarm or firefighting equipment. The maximum punishment for a misdemeanor is 90 days in jail and/or $1000.
