PROFILE – Filipino Club
The purpose of the Filipino club is to just share culture with everyone and build the community. The club’s president Ricah Gomez provided me with some information about the club and how it came to be.
“Filipino Club started out in January 2021 and it was suggested by my teacher, Ms. Mccullough, who was also Filipino. I’ve always loved talking about my culture to other people and the thought of sharing it with people in our school seemed like a fun idea, especially when spirits were low at the time of the pandemic. At first, it was difficult to plan the meetings and manage the club since I was doing it all by myself. We only had five members then, so I honestly had low expectations for the future of the club. But when school finally went in person in 2021, I was surprised by the number of people who came to the club.
Now, we have so many people who attend the meetings, even those who aren’t Filipino. Our goal of the club is to share our culture with everyone at Lindbergh and build our Filipino community. We believe that even if you’re not Filipino by blood, you can be Filipino at heart.”
The club’s activities vary. Here are a few:
- Traditional dancing
- Binasuan (a dance where you have to balance glass cups filled with water on your hands and head)
- Tinikling (a dance where you have to avoid stepping on bamboo sticks)
- Re-enacting scenes from Filipino dramas
- Karaoke
- Filipino history
- re-colonial
- Spanish-colonial
- Filipino street games
- Collaboration with UW FASA, Hazen FASA, and Renton FSU
