Teacher Academy
Teacher Academy is an elective class 11th and 12th graders can take. This class can be yearlong if you choose and you can get college credits for that.
This class is an opportunity for you to learn how to work with kids and be a teacher. You get to go to different elementary schools around the area and watch/teach a grade of your choice. The way students get there is driving themselves or taking a bus.
When asking students in the class, Brianna Morris and Sarah McKinley, they said “Teacher Academy gives better social skills especially with kids but also talking to adults in a professional way.” They have to sometimes email the elementary teachers and learn how to do it properly in a professional manner.
These students learn to problem solve when teaching younger kids. It can be a challenge to teach children because they don’t completely understand right from wrong yet. When working in a classroom you get to either take over a lesson and teach them or you observe the teacher and class.
Talking to Brianna and Sarah they said some drawbacks are, there is a lot of work especially writing, and kids can be very overstimulating sometimes. Learning to work with kids isn’t always easy and there can be setbacks but this class helps you learn how to overcome that.
More positive things, the class goes on field trips. This year they went to central university and stayed overnight, last year there was a three day camping trip. You get to connect with your peers more and meet new people in your school.
This class helps you become comfortable talking to new people, a valuable skill for teaching. It offers experience working with kids and adults for people who want this career, growing your ability to collaborate with others.
Overall teaching academy gives you experience with new environments and overcoming challenges of being a teacher if that’s the career you want to pursue.
