DECA at Lindbergh High School provides students with real-world business experience through competitions, networking and leadership training.
Kalkidan Gebre a DECA member explains, “DECA gives students real experience by competing, creating business plans and working with professionals.” The organization focuses on marketing, finance, hospitality and management helping students develop career skills.
DECA offers competitions such as roleplays where students receive a business scenario and have limited time to present solutions to judges. “You get 10 or 20 minutes to prepare then present your ideas,” says JG a former DECA student. “There are also events where you write a 10 to 30-page business plan.” With over 75 categories students can explore different industries from sports marketing to automotive business.
Through DECA students gain professional skills that prepare them for the future. JG recalls his first conference: “It was the first time I put on a suit and spoke with business professionals. It taught me how to present myself and communicate effectively.” He also learned a valuable lesson about accountability when he missed deadlines and was unable to attend a major conference. “I was upset at first but I realized that if I commit to something I have to follow through.”
DECA also helps students step out of their comfort zones by meeting new people and competing with students from across the world. “Some conferences have thousands of students. It helps you build friendships and learn how to talk to people,” JG says.
For students considering DECA JG has simple advice: “Just go. Try everything and don’t be afraid. Everyone is there to support you and help you succeed.”
