HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) at LHS helps students gain hands-on experience and explore careers in healthcare. Led by Ms. Watts, the club provides valuable skills and opportunities for students interested in the medical field, preparing them for future success.
HOSA allows students to develop technical and professional skills essential for healthcare careers. Ms. Watts, the club’s advisor, explains that HOSA provides “hands-on work skill experience and practice, allowing students to apply what they have learned to specific healthcare fields they are interested in.” The club also introduces students to different specialties, helping them discover career paths they may not have previously considered.
Beyond the classroom, HOSA prepares students for real-world experiences through competitions, leadership roles, and networking opportunities. “Students get to experience hands-on skills and practice applying them,” Ms. Watts said. Members also have opportunities to participate in healthcare-related events, further enhancing their understanding of the field.
Since taking over as advisor, Ms. Watts has seen the club grow in size and involvement. She finds her role rewarding, stating, “Being able to help students and see them grow, and realizing they have a future for themselves, is the best part of being an advisor.” Many former HOSA members have gone on to pursue degrees in nursing, medicine, and other healthcare fields.
Looking ahead, Ms. Watts hopes to expand HOSA and offer more hands-on experiences. “My vision is to grow our members and increase interaction between the club,” she said. By providing more real-world practice, HOSA aims to better prepare students for their future careers.
HOSA remains a vital resource for students pursuing careers in healthcare, offering skill development, career exploration, and valuable industry exposure. Those interested in joining can connect with Ms. Watts or attend a meeting to learn more about the opportunities the club provides
