District – “schools won’t close if snow falls”
February 10, 2021
From the Renton School District notice – Weather forecasts call for freezing temperatures and possible snow this week. We will continue to provide instruction even if there is snowfall. One advantage of continuing with an in-home learning day, as opposed to canceling school, is to alleviate the need for makeup days at the end of the academic calendar in June.
Staff
Live and asynchronous instruction will continue to be provided remotely if inclement weather precludes staff from coming into their school building. Please ensure you have the necessary materials to provide instruction from home. Non-teaching staff who are working in person are expected to arrive at work as soon as safely possible.
Students
Please make a habit of charging Chromebooks/other devices every day. If you have power/internet, students should:
· Log into class as usual.
· Check district email for messages from your teacher or another school staff member.
· Continue work on previously assigned learning activities.
· Participate in posted learning activities.
NOTE: If a teacher’s power or internet goes out during class, log off Zoom. Work on previously assigned learning activities or assignments. Attempt to log back into the Zoom session after 15 minutes, and again in 30 minutes. Students should attend other classes according to their regular schedule.
Communication
No mass phone call or email will be sent by district to families or staff.
Families and teaching staff:
· Because most students and staff will continue to operate on a regular in-home learning schedule, Renton Schools will not email/call families with a snow message for a typical snowfall (like those that usually communicate a 2-hour delay to the school day). Teachers and staff will continue a regular day.
Non-teaching staff
· Staff will continue their regular workday and should report to their work location as soon as safely possible unless told otherwise by their principal/supervisor.
o Nutrition Service staff currently working at meal sites and bus drivers with current routes should report to their work location as soon as safely possible, or will be contacted by their supervisor if there is a change to the regular workday.
Grab & Go meals served at school
If snowfall is significant, it might be necessary to close our Grab & Go meal service at schools and at community locations. If the weather requires us to cancel Monday/Wednesday meal service, Renton School District will call/email families with a message.
