Weekend Recap – 2/21

Grant captures 4th in 100 butterfly; Myers wrestles to 5th place; Sumina Gurung places 7th in girls tournament.

A great weekend for state wrestling and boys swimming and diving teams. (Gymnastics results not reported).

Seniors Jeffrey Myers wrestled to a 5th place trophy in the 182 weight class. Despite issues with both shoulders, Myers entered the Mat Classic ready to conquer. Here is a match by match breakdown:

  • Champ. Round 1 – Meyers won by decision over Cota Stover (Ridgefield) 5-5 (Dec 12-5)
  • Quarterfinal – Nehemiah Michael Medrano (Prosser) 5-2 won by decision over Meyers  (Dec 9-3)
  • Cons. Round 2 – Myers won in sudden victory – 1 over Caber Taylor (Rogers (Spokane)) 19-7 (SV-1 7-5)
  • Cons. Round 3 – Myers  won by fall over Owen Carpenter (Sedro-Woolley) 5-4 (Fall 4:11)
  • Cons. Semi – Gerald Schmidt (Selah) 7-1 won by decision over Myers  (Dec 3-2)
  • 5th Place Match – Myers won by fall over Cota Stover (Ridgefield) 5-5 (Fall 1:46).

Teammate and senior Sumina Gurung placed 7th in the girls 100 weight class.

  • Champ. Round 1 – Gurung received a bye.
  • Champ. Round 2 – Gurung won by fall over Madison Coulter (Puyallup (Girls)) 13-11 (Fall 0:47)
  • Quarterfinal – Isabella Morales (Toppenish (Girls)) 8-0 won by fall over Gurung (Fall 1:06)
  • Cons. Round 4 – Gurung fall over Madelynn Machowek (Aberdeen (Girls)) 18-7 (Fall 1:34)
  • Cons. Round 5 – Savannah Sinclair (Central Kitsap (Girls)) 18-2 won by fall over Gurung (Fall 2:53)
  • 7th Place Match – Gurung won by fall over Natalie Johnson (Port Angles (Girls)) 11-5 (Fall 1:49).

Her freshman sister, Purnima Gurung made her Mat Classic debut.

  • Champ. Round 1 – Purnima Gurung won by decision over Emma Bowers (Orting (Girls)) 16-7 (Dec 10-9)
  • Champ. Round 2 – Azalea Fetters (Curtis (Girls)) 19-2 won by fall over Purnima Gurung  (Fall 0:45)
  • Cons. Round 2 – Luna Martinez-Arevalo (Centralia (Girls)) 6-5 won by fall over Purnima Gurung (Fall 3:00).

Senior Treavor Atkins won his first match over Gavin Garner (Kingston) by pin 4:39. He lost two straight to be eliminated.

Junior Josue Del Rio won his first round match again Sabastian Bustos (Centralia) by pin 1:55. He lost two straight to be eliminated in two pins.

Nathan Hayashida lost both matches to be eliminated early.

 

BOYS SWIMMING/DIVING

Sophomore Heston Grant led the Eagles to a 4th place finish in the 100 butterfly (Gene Bushaw placed 19th). Grant  also won the consolation final of the 100 breaststroke.

The 200 Free Relay –  Grant, Alex Bui, CJ Seid, and Michael Clair placed 8th in the championship final.

The 400 Free Relay – Seid, Bushaw, Bui,  Grant placed 10th.

Clair and Bui both competed in the diving championships. Clair was in the lead after several dives. Bui moved into 6th place after his third dive. However both divers lost steam with Clair finishing 12th and Bui placing 15th. Bui’s fifth dive was a heart stopper after he attempted a backwards dive. He’s legs smashed the diving board. He was evaluated by lifeguards and returned for the final three dive with bandages on both legs.

Overall the team scored 67 points and finished 12th overall as a team.

Diving coach Bryce Jensen was awarded the  Washington Interscholastic Aquatic Coaches Association (WIACA) COACH OF THE YEAR AWARD.  Congrats Coach Jensen.
