When Seattle implemented later school start times, it had a profound positive impact on the students. Before the change, students faced challenges engaging in their work and participating in discussions due to sleep deprivation and exhaustion. However, after the adjustment, students showed increased engagement in classes and discussions, benefiting from additional sleep each night.
I completely agree that the Renton School District should emulate Seattle’s approach and consider starting school later than 8 a.m. for various reasons. Currently, with school being at 7:20 a.m. on weekdays, many students have to wake up as early as 5 a.m. or even earlier to prepare for their day. Teens who begin school later typically get the recommended 8-10 hours of sleep per night, contrasting with only 5-8 hours or less for those with early start times. This difference significantly impacts their focus and academic performance. By shifting school start times in Renton, students are likely to be more engaged in their studies and achieve improved grades. Therefore, adjusting school start times in the Renton School District is essential for enhancing student well-being and academic success.
