School Board waives community service hours for seniors

Other state laws could be changed to reduce the number of credits to graduate.

The Renton School District Board of Directors voted to waive the 20 hour community service requirement to graduating. Stating many local businesses and non-profits organization are closed or have limited opportunities for students to meet their graduation requirement. Those students who have earned Community Service Awards for the number of hours volunteered will still be presented those awards.

Additionally the board was given information on two bills to reduce the number of credits to graduation. House Bill 1121, State Board of Education (SBE) emergency waiver bill allowing SBE  to authorize schools to grant individual student waivers from graduation requirements due to a local, state, or national emergency. This bill has passed both the House and Senate and awaits the governors signature. The State Board of Education held a special meeting today for gather input on the matter.

House Bill 1162 – High school graduation credit and pathway options.  Reduces the number of credits required for high school graduation from 24 to 20 and applies the revised credit requirements to the Class of 2021 and subsequent classes.
