As Track begins, new coaches also roll in, such as Mr. Wiggins. He’s the throwing coach for this year’s 2024 – 2025 season. Coach Wiggins has experience coaching teams, as he also coached the girls’ basketball team this past winter season.
Many players believe that they will go far this season, and Daymarion, one of this year’s throwers, was asked a few questions. “I expect to make it out of districts, with me, Samu, Kason, and Taleni,” Henderson said. He stated how last season he quit due to the coaching, but he believes that just having these new coaches and their work ethic will definitely make it better than last year. When asked what his strong suit is, he said, “I main javelin, and my PR is 103 meters.” He hopes to work his way up to make it or even beat the Washington State record of 192 meters this season.
Taleni Talaga, who is also a senior whose “strong suit is specifically javelin,” Talaga said. He stated, “I want to be able to hit personal goals along with getting better each practice.” Adding on to what Henderson said earlier, he states how this year’s season will be different due to the new coaching, along with the work ethic that is put into the players. He also has high hopes that they will make it past districts this year! Talaga’s “personal record was 120 meters” and has hopes to hit a new record this season.
Kason Smith, one of the younger guys on the squad at only a sophomore, pushes himself more than anybody. Smith’s personal expectations are to grow and learn from those around him. “I want to make it to districts, and my goal is to throw around 115 feet this year,” Smith said. He is also a javelin thrower, like Talaga and Henderson. Smith’s strong suit is being able to take on the role of captain of the team when needed, due to him being a dual-sport athlete. “When something needs to be done, I like to take the initiative and do it.”
Stay up to date and in tune with this year’s Track team. There is so much to come from these guys, and expect to see them possibly in regionals!
