Na’chaya Johnson is one of the three current Lindbergh High school cheer captains. She is currently in her junior year.
Johnson first joined cheer her freshman year. She states “The tryout process was a little bit different because that year they were going in between coaches, so that was the year Coach Sam became a coach. So, I ended up joining like late summer so I didn’t go to cheer camp that year. My first year of cheer camp was my sophomore year.”
Johnson had been cheering since she was six, it had been a thought of hers to cheer in high school and college since she was little. Johnson also did other sports–she had a passion for volleyball as well. However, the seasons crossed over so she figured she would cheer.
Johnson believes the cheer team impacts the school by bringing spirit to pep rallies, assemblies, and games. It’s essential and what cheer is for, to bring the spirit and to cheer on fellow sports teams. It creates an environment full of positivity.
Johnson, when asked about her favorite season, states that, “Competition season–just for that specific season–but all the seasons have their negatives and positives. I pick competition season because with football or basketball season it’s a yes and no. I switch all the time.”
Currently, her favorite thing about cheer is how much the team has grown. Each year, the team grows more and more. Specifically this year has grown a lot–they even established a junior varsity team. Building connections and having people to relate to is important!
Aside from cheer, art captures Johnson’s interest the most. It’s really relaxing and it’s always been a hobby of hers. This year, Johnson is most excited about competing in competitions.
