This year’s first flag football season brought new experiences for players like Rylee Castillo and Scarlett Van Houten. Both say the team’s growth, energy, and support have made the sport fun and meaningful.
Castillo said she joined after seeing the email and wanting to try something new. She didn’t expect much at first, but now she enjoys the coach, the team, and the practices. She likes how everyone is learning the sport together and how flag football has become something she looks forward to every day.
Castillo also mentioned the team has improved a lot with understanding plays and rules, since many are new to flag football. With equipment provided by the Seattle Seahawks, practices focus on offense, defense, drills, and flag-pulling. She said the learning and teamwork mix makes practices fun, steady, and productive for everyone.
Van Houten said she joined to try a new sport and keep herself busy. She was surprised by how many girls eventually joined, making plays and drills more exciting. She believes the team’s strengths are sportsmanship and effort, always supporting each other after mistakes and giving full energy through every practice and scrimmage.
Both Castillo and Van Houten said their goals include improving their positions, listening closely to coaching, and building confidence in games. They hope to score more and keep growing. They agree the team has created a positive space where everyone learns, supports each other, and proudly represents their school.
